Nidoto Nai Yoni (“Let it not happen again”) Memorial
Bainbridge Island, WA
CRC provided an archaeological assessment for proposed construction activities associated with development of the Bainbridge Island Nikkei Memorial, recently designated a National Historic Monument. The City of Bainbridge Island, in conjunction with the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community Memorial Committee, is developing this memorial. The memorial is intended to educate the public about the internment and incarceration of the Japanese resident aliens and Japanese Americans, collectively known as Nikkei, during the Second World War and to commemorate and honor these Nikkei.
CRC’s field investigations identified a buried archaeological shell midden in the project area. Limited subsurface survey was conducted to locate a provisional boundary for the midden. Additionally, remnants of pilings from the 1937 Eagledale Ferry Dock are present off-shore of the memorial site, and a 100-year old western red cedar tree in the project area has been designated as a landmark tree and accepted to the National Register of Historic Trees.
CRC developed a construction monitoring plan to protect the archaeological resources in place and avoid adverse impacts.
As a commitment to our community, CRC provided cultural resource services to the memorial committee pro bono.
