Port Orchard Wastewater Treatment Plant
Port Orchard, WA
Human skeletal remains were discovered when the City of Port Orchard began construction of an expansion to its existing wastewater treatment facility. A construction worker found the remains, and there had not been an archaeological assessment for the project prior to initiation of construction. CRC was subsequently contracted by the City of Port Orchard to assess the location of the inadvertent discovery of the remains.
CRC conducted a field appraisal of the discovery location and prepared an assessment and recovery plan. This investigation coincided with removal of approximately 600 cubic yards of excavated sediment from the location to an off-site gravel quarry. CRC assembled a crew of Suquamish tribal technicians to assist with recovery of the displaced human remains from the quarry. CRC also provided archaeological monitoring at the construction site. Following additional consultation between all parties, the remains were repatriated to the Suquamish Tribe for reburial.
